Let's Talk about You
I'd like to talk about you.
You
You are a software engineer. Or you want to be a software engineer.
You're brand new and want to get hired
You want to break into the tech industry. Who wouldn't? Good pay (even in this down market). Work from anywhere. Unlimited PTO. Stock and equity. Etc.
You're smart, hardworking, and pleasant. If only someone would give you a chance.
You've been laid off and need to find the next gig
You've blasted out hundreds of resumes. Landed a few screening interviews.
You trudged through many rounds of tech and "behavorial" interviews only to come up empty.
You're a junior wanting more
You have a year or two under your belt.
You've done a good job at your company. You've delivered value. You put in overtime. You do anything management asks.
You're waiting to be rewarded for your loyalty and hardwork - a raise or promotion. But so far nothing.
You're a mid-level or senior feeling stagnant
You've been writing software for several years.
You've accomplished a lot. You've learned a lot. You're thinking: "Do I need to go into management to advance?"
But at the end of the day, you enjoy buidling things. So where do you go from here?
Software is Hard
Even in this age of AI, writing good software is HARD.
And it's not enough to build a website or a single application. You need to build systems. Websites, apps, services, databases, UIs, APIs, infrastructure - all working together toward a common goal.
You must build expertise in all sorts of areas.
You must adapt quickly in an ever evolving environment. That framework you loved is now deprecated. The product you were building is the wrong one and the company needs to pivot.
Your Guide
There's a lot of software gurus out there. An ocean full of them. They all talk about helping you level up, like some sort of video game. But what does that mean?
Here's what I think you want:
To be too valuable to let go.
To land your first job.
To find a better job.
Multiple job offers.
That big promotion.
You want recognition. You want to be so good they can't ignore you.
But, you don't want to be good. You want to be elite.
And, most of all, you want to build. Deep down in your core, you are a creator. You want to bring something to life that didn't exist before.
I want to be your guide. I want to give you a plan to achieve these goals. To flourish in the world of software development.
If you're reading this for the first time, I know we just met. You don't trust me. I'm just another guy on the internet.
I hope future articles will build that trust.
To Your Future
On the next round of layoffs, I want you to be safe. You're the first in line for that promotion. You have several job offers when you decide it's time for something new.
You never have to worry about being unemployed again. Because if you find yourself jobless, it won't take long to get a new one.
Here's what I don't want for you:
You're stuck in a job you hate.
You've got golden handcuffs.
You can't break into tech.
You feel undervalued.
So I invite you to subscribe. And let's get you to the place you want to be.
